My time spent attending the Milestone session at The Soderquist Center last week was transformational. In fact, I can say it was the most impactful leadership training experience of my life, thus far. Going through this experience truly gave me a better understanding of myself as a leader, including both my strengths and my struggles. While I’ve always lived and led according to values, last week gave me a great deal more clarity and understanding of how these values define me as a leader.
Having been through the experience, we’re asked to create personal action plans, including what we want to keep, stop, and start. Mine are as follows:
• Keep – I have stronger convictions than ever about staying true to my core values in all situations. These values define me as a leader, and are essential not only to my success, but also to my impacting the world around me in a positive way. These core values are authenticity, loyalty, compassion, harmony, trust, and faith.
• Stop – The ropes course brought me face-to-face with my staggering fear of failure. The fear I experienced on the ropes had nothing to do with physical injury, and everything to do with the potential humiliation of failing. I need to stop allowing this fear to impede me from enjoying new challenges.
• Start – As I reject a fear of failure, I must begin embracing new challenges with enthusiasm and confidence. With the support of others, I can complete the most challenging of tasks.
While I’ve focused my attention on the professional impact of this experience, I will also share that it impacted me as a man in my personal life. Again, while I’ve always lived my life according to values and ethics, I truly find myself viewing the purpose and impact of my life choices in a different way.
